Raw emerald: what it is, its origin in Muzo and why every piece is unique
What raw emerald is, where the Muzo emerald comes from, and why every natural Aluna stone is a one-of-a-kind piece.
In the workshop, the first box we open every morning is the one with the stones. Before we think about designs or gold baths, we choose the emerald: each one arrives exactly as the earth delivered it, uncut, unpolished, with its original shape, veining and inclusions. Far from being a flaw, that imperfection is its signature: no two stones are alike.
Most of our emeralds come from Muzo, a municipality in Boyacá, Colombia, recognized as the birthplace of the finest emerald in the world. Since pre-Columbian times, the Muisca people considered it a sacred stone: a symbol of fertility, life and connection to the land. Wearing emerald is wearing centuries of history on your skin.
At Aluna we hand-pick them one by one, favoring the deep green and the natural inclusions that tell millions of years of history underground. When a stone speaks to us, we set it raw, barely touching it, so it keeps the essence of its origin: a fragment of Colombian territory that never repeats itself.
Then comes the work of the workshop: the piece is modeled and cast, receives two 24k gold baths and a high-temperature lacquer seal that protects its finish. Everything is designed so the stone — and the story it carries — stays the protagonist.
Choosing a piece with raw emerald is not choosing jewelry: it is choosing a piece of history that no one else will ever have. And that, at Aluna, is the only rule that matters.
